They united, and for the first time in history, were truly able to co-operate during a time where Europe was divided. This also shows the theme of globalization, as countries were able to completely unite with each other.

Gas MaskGas masks were important during the first World War. During this time, new weaponry was developed, such as machine guns and chemical weapons. Mustard gas was abundant during the war, and soldiers had to wear these masks to keep the gas out of their lungs. These weapons changed fighting and brought about modern warfare.

Colonies in AfricaAn important theme of the West during the Contemporary Era was decolonization. This can be see through England’s dwindling colonies in Africa. After 1914, former colonies of England soon gained their independence, no longer dependent on the “Mother Country” for survival. They were able to function on their own.

Berlin WallThe Berlin Wall was an overbearing symbol of the Cold War. The Cold War was characterized by the European split between Capitalism and Communism, as well as the stalemate between the two. If one side wanted to use atomic bombs, then the other would, and the world would be destroyed. The Wall is important because it symbolized the split down the middle of Berlin. Half of it was Capitalist, the other Communist.
