Bolshevik RevolutionAfter the collapse of the tsarist state in March of 1917, another revolution took place in Russia in November of 1917. The Bolsheviks led the revolution which was headed by Vladimir Lenin. Most of the population was opposed to the Bolsheviks taking power, so a civil war broke out in 1918. In the end, the Bolsheviks won power in 1921, and created a new Russian state, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or the Soviet Union, in 1922.

ArtilleryBy early 1915, there was a shortage of artillery such as guns, shells, machine tools and chemicals. This shortage of items threatened the government’s ability to participate and dominate in the war. Worried about not staying in the war, patriotic business owners jumped in to help by cooperating with the military in order to produce more artillery and essential products. These groups were called war-industry committees, which integrated small and medium sized business owners with military production.

The Cold WarThe United States and the Soviet Union ended World War 2 as allies. However, the United states had growing worries and suspicions of Stalin's communism. With this, the United States felt that the only way to combat this was a to use a tactic entitled containment, which kept the Soviet’s from being a legitimate global power. This tension and containment led to the outbreak of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States in 1947. |
Space RaceOn April 12, 1961, the Soviet Union was successful in sending the first man on Earth into space. This achievement was closely followed the launch of the first satellite in space by the Soviet’s in 1957. Russian Astronaut, Yuri Gagarin, was the first man in space making a 108-minute orbital flight in the Vostok 1 spacecraft.
